ETS Research & Development has an opening for junior through senior-level Psychometrician in the Center for Assessment Analytics & Research unit within Psychometrics, Statistics and Data Sciences in our Princeton, NJ office. The successful candidate will be engaged in projects aimed at advancing the science and practice of large-scale educational survey assessments such as the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The position offers exciting opportunities for researchers interested in contributing to external and internal research projects designed to develop and evaluate measurement and explanatory models suitable for educational survey assessments and surveys in general. A primary focus of this position is to contribute to federally funded projects as well as to provide service to the program areas of ETS, including foundational and applied psychometric and statistical research.

Experience and Skills

REQUIREMENTS FOR A JUNIOR LEVEL POSITION:

A Ph.D. in educational measurement, statistics, survey statistics, quantitative or cognitive psychology, biometrics or a closely related quantitative field is required with one year of experience in the utilization of psychometric methods, statistical procedures and their applications; apply classical test theory and item response theory; contribute to survey design, research and analytics; contribute to new or modified research methodology and analytic or interpretative procedures in the area of large scale educational surveys; develop professional relationships as a representative, consultant or advisor to external advisory and policy boards and councils, research organizations, educational institutions and educators. Experience may be gained through doctoral studies.

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MID-LEVEL POSITION:

A Ph.D. in educational measurement, statistics, survey statistics, quantitative or cognitive psychology, biometrics, or a closely related quantitative field with at least three years of experience in an applied measurement or academic/statistical analysis environment is required. This position requires initiative, creativity, research skills and technical expertise; generate or contribute to new or modified research methodology and analytic or interpretative procedures in the area of large scale educational surveys; develop professional relationships as a representative, consultant or advisor to external advisory and policy boards and councils, research organizations, educational institutions and educators. 

REQUIREMENTS FOR A SENIOR-LEVEL POSITION:

A Ph.D. in educational measurement, statistics, survey statistics, quantitative or cognitive psychology, biometrics, or a closely related quantitative field with at least six years of experience in an applied measurement or statistical analysis environment is required. This position requires initiative, creativity, advanced research skills and technical expertise.  Senior-level staff engage in exploratory and applied research and methods and provide operational and strategic technical guidance on the use of current and emerging technology, innovations and research; develop professional relationships as a representative, consultant or advisor to external advisory and policy boards and councils, research organizations, educational institutions and educators.   

Other Requirements:

The following qualifications are required at all job levels.

  • Experience designing and conducting psychometric analyses in support of testing programs.
  • Proven ability to analyze, research, and propose solutions to current and future measurement problems, and to communicate those solutions effectively.
  • Expertise with classical test theory, factor analysis, and item response theory is required, as is experience with statistical analysis software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, R, Mplus, BILOG and/or PARSCALE).
  • Facility in communicating to varied audiences in verbal and written communications.
  • Ability to lead design and analysis projects, cross-functional teams, and quantitative research studies.
  • Initiative, creativity and ability to implement theories and methods both from within the educational measurement field, but also from other fields of study to support and enhance our products and services.
