ETS’s Research & Development division is seeking a creative and innovative individual to serve as User Experience Researcher/Designer in the ETS AI Research Labs. The AI Research Labs are user-obsessed across all phases of research and development and focus on prototyping adaptive and personalized learning product concepts with compelling user interfaces and AI-enhanced experiences. Prototypes will be built on a foundation of learning and cognitive science principles that leverage interactive task design, machine learning, and data sciences to be integrated in various teaching, learning, and assessment solutions.

Position Summary: 

The User Experience (UX) Researcher/Designer will work in a cross-functional team of researchers and developers to(a)understand target market and user segments and how to identify users from both (b) engage with users in interviews, observations, focus groups and other data collection activities to understand their needs and lead the UI/UX aspects of user experience research and associated interface design, wireframing, and documentation for engaging, interactive, and innovative capabilities, (c) serve as design leads for small interdisciplinary agile teams focused on producing user-informed functional prototypes that could be tested in target markets, and (d) collaborate with both internal and external colleagues and consultants to ensure on-time completion of project goals.  

Responsibilities: 

  • Apply design thinking and user-centered research and design principles to prototypes and product concepts developed in the AI Research Labs. 
  • Engage with users of target market and user segments to conduct visioning activities, needs assessments, validation of problem statements, and ongoing testing through the development lifecycle.
  • Use collected information to translate ideas from users/clients (e.g., students, teachers, international learners, higher education institutions) into engaging, accessible, and highly usable designs through audience and needs analyses, user interview, journey maps, etc. 
  • Keep abreast of the trends and latest research in human computer interaction and related fields. Remain current with usability and / or accessibility guidelines that change with evolving technologies. 
  • Implement best practices for user experience research and design. 
  • Collaborate with technical staff and designers, and outside consultants as needed, to ensure that the finished product adheres to the design goals and conforms to ETS technical, accessibility, and architectural standards. 
  • Work with research scientists, learning scientists, data scientists, instructional designers, software developers, and product owners in cross-functional agile teams to support the efficient and effective development of AI-enabled product concepts and prototypes.

Experience and Skills

R&D UX/UI Specialist Requirements 

Education, Certifications, or Special Licenses: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in technology-related field of study (computer science, information technology, educational technology, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), user design, or web/graphic design) or the equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, experience, certification can be acquired is required. 
  • Master’s degree plus 0 years of experience. 
  • Additional coursework in cognitive science, computer science, user design is desirable.  

Relevant Years of Experience:

  • Three (3) or more years of professional experience in the design/research for technology-based user experiences is required. 
  • Previous experience working with programmers is desirable, as is prior experience working with teams to ensure that designs support usability, accessibility, and / or visual appeal of end product.  
  • Previous experience in leading user/client requirements-gathering sessions, usability testing, and design presentations is desirable. 
  • Previous experience in storyboarding, prototyping, and graphic design is required. 
  • 2-3 years of experience working in learning/assessment, educational research, or educational fields is required. 

Senior R&D UX/UI Specialist Requirements 

Education, Certifications, or Special Licenses: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in technology-related field of study (computer science, information technology, educational technology, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), user design, or web/graphic design) or the equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, experience, certification can be acquired is required. 
  • Master’s degree plus three (3) years of experience. 
  • Additional coursework in cognitive science, computer science, user design is desirable. 

Relevant Years of Experience:

  • Six (6) or more years of diverse professional experience in the design/research for complex technology-based user experiences is required. 
  • Previous experience working with programmers is critical, as is prior experience guiding teams to provide or ensure that design supports usability and / or visual appeal of end product. 
  • Previous experience leading user/client requirements-gathering sessions, usability testing, and design presentations is required, as is experience in storyboarding, prototyping, and graphic design. 
  • 3-4 years of experience working in learning/assessment, educational research, or educational fields is required. 

Other Requirements: 

  • A portfolio review will be conducted as part of the interview process.  Candidates will be asked to articulate complex sequences of user interactions and design decisions along with a critique of their own work.
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, and experience working with internal and external customers are required. 
  • Well-developed organizational skills, strong technical skills and a willingness/adeptness with regards to learning new technology are required. 
  • Experience in education research and/or assessment development and up-to-date knowledge of the industry, trends, and standard practices are preferred. 
  • Facility with project management, work organization, and Microsoft Office tools is preferred. 
  • Strong understanding of the requirements of each stage within the digital design product/assessment development process as well as the understanding of the principles, conventions, terminology and tools for stages in the development process is preferred. 
  • Demonstrating the ability to adapt previous work experiences and gain knowledge from others and successfully provide recommendations or a course of action in new and ambiguous situations is desirable. 
  • Being able to adapt to changes to policies and processes and apply new learnings in an expected or reasonable time frame is desirable. 
  • Being able to work effectively in a cross-functional team setting and take an active role in contributing to team discussions and decisions across a wide range of domains, and collaborate well with research scientists, assessment specialists, other designers, and / or programmers.
